Grow where you’re planted.

Good neighbors take care of each other. Our goal with our church ministries and community outreach programs is to cultivate a sense of belonging. At Morning Star COGIC, we believe God has called us to nurture our community with love through acts of service.

You are more than welcome to join any of our ministries and programs.

Church Ministries

Sunday School

Our most valuable and interactive ministry is Sunday School. Don’t be fooled by its old-fashioned name--Morning Star Sunday School is where the good times roll. You’ll expand and learn from the most amazing, passionate teachers. Our Sunday School program includes children’s groups, men’s groups, and women’s groups.

Vacation Bible School

Our largest annual outreach program is Vacation Bible School (VBS). The Morning Star VBS is typically attended by up to 80 children. We usually align VBS kick-off with the Oakland Night Out summer event. VBS is 4 full days of art, music, theater, and crafts, and lunch is always included.

Men’s Group

At Morning Star, we recognize the collective pain and trauma that often goes unacknowledged by the male community. With societal pressure to be “strong,” we find that men tend to suffer in silence. Our Men’s group aims to break through that harmful cultural expectation so that healing can begin. Our Men’s Group offers community events, including breakfasts, retreats and inspirational speakers. During last year’s retreat, the keynote speaker addressed the question, “How do we survive as men in 2019?” We laughed, cried, prayed, bonded, and most importantly, we made lifelong friendships and a support system of individuals whose goal is to heal from past traumas.

New Members Workshop

We recognize that entering a new community, such as a church, can be intimidating. Our New Members Workshop is designed to welcome you into the church by offering support and friendship to help you feel comfortable at Morning Star. One of the most valuable aspects of the New Members Workshop is the Q&A component where you can learn more about Morning Star, and most importantly, learn how your unique gifts fit in with the community. The workshop includes classes and informational material. We encourage new members to attend the New Members Workshop during the first 3 weeks of their Morning Star experience.

Medical Minute

As part of our mission to support the health and wellbeing of our community, we have started the Medical Minute by our local Registered Nurse. This outreach aims to provide health information, health screenings, and a setting to ask questions so we can live healthy lives.

Sister Roz’s Monthly Health Reminders

  • Keep in mind the two most important health factors: sleep and mental health.

  • Continue to wash your hands.

  • Get a good amount of physical activity and eat healthy meals.

More Outreach Programs

Please note that we are currently re-conceptualizing how the following outreach programs will look post-Covid-19. We are looking forward to beginning these programs very soon.

Food Drive

For the past 5 years, we’ve worked in partnership with the Alameda Food Bank to hand out groceries in West Oakland. Following a prayer circle, volunteers help sort food items and put bags together. Our food drive typically serves 100+ community members per month.

Clothing Closet

The goal of the Clothing Closet is to support the homeless working class. Our motto is “Dress to be Blessed” and volunteers assist with providing clean, professional job interview clothing for individuals in need. We partner with our neighboring congregation at the Westside Missionary Baptist Church, which offers their shower facilities once a week.

Caring for those

in need

Part of our mission is to support those who are in need, either physically or spiritually. Part of our outreach includes visiting the sick and community members who are homebound. This outreach aims to reach folks who aren’t able to attend a church service but who still want to connect. We aim to bring the ministry to you.
